Every Bite Has a Story

What does local food mean to you?

Maybe it’s an Eastern European classic or a soul food staple. Maybe it’s a taste of home from AsiaTown, La Villa Hispana, Little Italy, or Little Arabia. Maybe it’s fresh produce from the West Side Market, an urban farm, a food bank, or your own garden.

Every bite has a story โ€” and this spring, libraries across Cuyahoga County are celebrating yours with BITE INTO BOOKS.

Made possible through a Big Read grant from the National Endowment for the Arts with support from Arts Midwest, BITE INTO BOOKS brings our community together around a shared reading experience. This year’s selection isย Bite by Bite: Nourishments & Jamborees by Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

BITE INTO BOOKS sparks conversations about personal and collective nourishment. Thereโ€™s a seat for everyone at the table โ€” read the book, attend a program, meet the author, and share your food memories to dig in!

GOAL 1

READ

Just as libraries nourish community, food sparks storytelling and connection โ€” making Bite by Biteย a natural fit for BITE INTO BOOKS.

Spanning forty foods, from Filipino lumpia to the Ohio pawpaw, the bookโ€™s short essays explore how what we eat shapes identity, relationships, and community.

Author Aimee Nezhukumatathil peppers the pages with memories, fun facts, and literary flavor, inviting readers to savor not just the food on their tables, but the people around it โ€” and to help build a community where everyone has a seat.

Not a Heights Libraries cardholder? Bite by Bite and companion texts are available at all participating libraries in a variety of formats, as well as through the CLEVNET App, the CCPL Mobile App, Libby, and hoopla.

GOAL 2

GATHER

Join Northeast Ohio’s biggest book club ever with discussions on Bite by Bite at participating libraries and a two-part visit with Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

Discover new cuisines, recipes, and ingredients through hands-on cooking programs. Not hungry? Catch a film screening, writing workshop, or another food-themed event. With so many libraries bringing their creativity to the table, thereโ€™s something for every age and appetite.

GOAL 3

SHARE

Which tastes or traditions feel like home? What lessons has food taught you? What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?

Every food story adds its own flavor to Cuyahoga County. Share yours through our community food story project and help create a collective narrative about the many ways food shapes our lives. All ages and perspectives are welcome!
